7 Signs a Terrorist Gives
Terrorists follow distinct pattern of seven steps, which give us signs, whether domestic or international terrorism:
- SURVEILLANCE
Where they:
- record or monitor activities
- draw diagrams
- make notes on a map
- establish routes to and from buildings
- often use vision-enhancing tools like binoculars
- have possession of floorplans of government facilities, transportation facilities, finance facilities, transportation facilities, etc.
- MAKE INQUIRIES
Where they attempt to get info regarding important places/operations at those places/workers at those places. The may ask via fax, mail, email, phone, or in person about:
- power/water plants
- bridges
- schools
- stadiums or shops
- schedules or delivery information
- TEST SECURITY
By:
- walking into restricted areas to gauge response
- testing strength and weakness at multiple spots throughout the building, even if not on the same day
- ACQUIRING SUPPLIES
All terrorists will need supplies to enter and execute, so they may:
- forge ID badges and steal uniforms (airport/law enforcement/worker, etc.)
- forge IDs such as passports
- steal boarding passes
- buy ammunition and weapons
- buy or steal explosives
- acquire chemicals/chemical equipment
- acquire flight manuals
- SUSPICIOUS OR OUT OF PLACE BEHAVIOR
They may:
- ask unusual questions of people that work in a building
- make unusual statements
- show up and hang near a workplace/building/neighborhood where they seem out of place or unknown
- DRY RUNS
Where they put people into position and move them around accoring to the eventual plan, without actually committing the act itself. They can then check the mapped out route for traffic flow.
- DEPLOYING ASSETS
The terrorists get into position at or near the target, sometimes leaving something behind, and removing themselves from the premises, other times staying with something suspicious (such as suicide bombers). THIS IS THE LAST OPPORTUNITY TO REPORT SOMETHING TO POLICE. DO NOT DISMISS IT.
IL has set up STIC (Statewide Terrorist Intelligence Command) and they are authorized to hold someone if local law enforcement says seems warranted. So there is a way for citizens to help, and that is to call 911. DO NOT dismiss the signs, but also DO NOT confront the person. Call 911 or report to officers on scene. |
